These resources have been prepared by members of the Clinical Affairs and the Quality and Regulatory Affairs teams to assist Cardinal Health pharmacy managers in meeting The Joint Commission’s standards for National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) 3E. The materials include background information on the program, including links to other sources of pertinent information. Additionally, a review of the “milestone” deadlines set by The Joint Commission for compliance measurement during the 2008 calendar year, as well as materials that can assist in meeting those deadlines are included. Finally, specific tools and examples that can be used to meet the Implementation Expectations (IE) that make up NPSG 3E.
Pharmacy managers are encouraged to review all of this material, including the weblinks and the linked documents, and should take a leadership role at the hospital to ensure that a team including administration, medical, pharmacy, nursing, dietary and laboratory staffs, risk management, and other appropriate personnel examine the current state of anticoagulation therapy and begin planning for necessary changes to meet the standards of this goal. The time to start is now – your first deadline is April 1, 2008!
It is suggested that these materials be shared first with the hospital administration to enlist their support in driving this multidisciplinary effort. Then, in a stepwise progression, introduce the tools and resources to those individuals who will be involved in the process of developing a plan for implementation of the standards.
